Say No To Grover

Once again, the country is held hostage, all because of a pledge given to a humorless minion of the super rich.  Which is exactly the reason to not stop applying pressure, even if the election is over!  Not as fun as the “kick Grover Norquist in the dick” petition, but I think its well worth signing!  Had to share with you, Kids!

Cecelia –

Grover Norquist’s iron grip on Republicans in Congress is so strong that they’re afraid to raise taxes on billionaires even one red cent.

But now some Republicans claim they’re coming to their senses about Grover and his anti-tax pledge. If you agree that it’s time to stop protecting tax cuts for the rich, then sign our petition to Boehner, Cantor and the Republicans.

Staten Island Relief

Below is an email from Matthew Hillyer, a MoveOn member in Brooklyn who created a petition on SignOn.org, the nonprofit site that allows anyone to start their own online petition.   Mathew has a very novel idea.

Dear Rego Park MoveOn member,

I’m a Brooklyn resident volunteering in Staten Island to help with the recovery process from Hurricane Sandy.

But it costs $13 per car to head over to help out! This hurts volunteers, small business owners, and residents trying to do their best to get back their feet.

A three-month moratorium on tolls would be a direct aid to the impacted communities and their volunteers.  Continue reading

Henry Rollins on Education

I am such a huge fan of Henry Rollins, and in so many of his modes of expression. I cribbed this video from Big Think because we all could do with some deep realistic thinking on the dream of college and the plight of students and graduates.  College tuition is outrageously expensive.  Young adults just out of school are crushed under student loan debt.  And there is rarely a great job waiting for them. Bill Nye: Creationism Is Not Appropriate For Children

So, some really devout Americans want Creationism taught in American schools as an alternate, and equally viable theory of explaining how the universe formed, the planet developed, how life came to be.  I think that’s just silly, and harmful for a number of reasons, and many scientists also feel that way.  Religion and science always seem to be at odds, don’t they?

This video featuring Bill Nye, deals with the teaching of Creationism to young students.

Happy Belated Birthday, Bill Nye!  We love you for your wonderful intellect and fantastic delivery of the information you share with us!

Buffett, Books, and Work

The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart hosts Warren Buffet and Carol Loomis for conversation about books, taxes, and the real moochers of America.

Carol, long time friend of Buffett, and accomplished financial journalist, and editor-at-large at Fortune magazine, wrote a book about the master money maker.  Continue reading

Jill Kelly: Petraeus Scandal Got Me a Job Offer!

Look, what I found on TMZ!

The David Petraeus sex scandal that Tampa socialite Jill Kelley is embroiled in has trickled down, in a positive way to adult film star Jill Kelly.  Isn’t that nice?  After all, a gal has got to work in this world.  Wonder when the erotic doppelgangers will pop up to portray the other players in the mess?   Maybe Gen. John Allen and Paula Broadwell also deserve to be immortalized in flesh flicks too.   And, now does this mean David Petraeus is technically a “job creator”?  Continue reading

FIOS Must Stop Torturing Me

This is the rant of a frustrated consumer.

My partner and I pay through the nose for substandard service and unimpressive internet speeds from Time Warner Cable.  Service was out during Hurricane Sandy, and after it was restored, so spotty that my partner or myself could not get work done or uploaded with out going to extraordinary, inconvenient and some times expensive lengths.  Ok, NYC has come mostly back on line with all our creature comforts, EXCEPT, my internet goes out during every important upload!  This loses my partner money, and could damage his reputation as a reliable go to source for video in his industry.

So we call on Verizon, to investigate this FIOS service which our research has indicated is faster, more stable, and a better value for the money charged.  Our neighbors and friends who have it, rave on and on.  After half a dozen phone calls,  a few emails and much back and forth, Continue reading

Helping to start a movement…

We all say we want the money out of politics.  We want representatives who work for us, not big corporate campaign donors.  Sometimes, even if you don’t have much, you have to kick in.  As we have learned in Election 2012, small amounts of money matter, when it has the will of millions of people behind it.

I donated $5 to United Republic’s Represent.Us, because I believe in their mission and have hope they will succeed with our help.  I thought I’d share the opportunity to check out the United Republic launch video and Josh Silver’s email with you.

Dear Cecelia,

Today is the first time since we started the campaign to Get Money Out that I’m asking you to make a donation. Before you delete this email or say “maybe later,” think about how crucial it is that we win. Think about the inspired campaign we unveiled last week, and the words of MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan:

“(We) have a bought Congress. And until we get rid of the bought Congress…there is no policy…no matter how brilliant it is…it will not happen as long as there is the capacity to fire a politician who disagrees with me by taking funding away from him.”

We launched Represent.Us: the campaign to pass the American Anti-Corruption Act because it’s the greatest hope we have to get money out and people back in. Continue reading
