You have to wonder if this Senate can confirm anyone in a timely fashion, say, in less than two months. After blocking an judicial appointment just to be contrary, the Senate finally confirmed Robert Bacharach to the United States Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit in Oklahoma.
I say finally, because Judge Bacharach waited 263 days for a Senate floor vote, only to be approved overwhelmingly, by a vote of 93-0. Many more judicial appointments await the Senate’s approval, and that fact is disheartening.
Is this stupidity the new normal? So many folks ready to get to work to improve the road this country is on, and yet the Senate Republicans continue to play around, and posture. Look at what’s pointedly not happening:
- Chuck Hagel’s appointment to the Defense Department held up by the “gang of three” grudges, concerns that his love of Israel is not quite deep enough, and of course, Benghazi fever.
- Still no real head of the ATF, even after all of these mass shootings. Why?? I guess, the NRA feels that infringes on their right to encourage swift and untraceable gun and ammunition sales.
- And the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s director, Richard Cordray, still not confirmed. For two years, Republicans have held his vote hostage unless the Senate would agree to weaken the agency and limit its ability to hold the big banks and credit card companies accountable.
It would seem somebody doesn’t want to see strong enforcement of our laws, or any change for the better of the nation. I only hope the voters show the Obstructionists how they feel about a Senate that collects a paycheck, yet gets nothing done.
