Another reason that the American taxpayer should be on a mission to stamp out bullying in our schools and institutions, you know, besides the fact that is morally right, is that it could cost us big bucks.
Recently, a New York judge has ruled that a 12-year old learning disabled girl who was tormented by other students at the highly rated PS 6 on the Upper East Side of New York City, may have been deprived of her educational rights. The City could be required to pay for her $40,000 USD tuition to a private school, setting a landmark precedent. The city has about 1.1 million public school students who receive special ed services, and if the ruling is upheld, experts warn the fallout could cost NYC tremendously, as bullying experts claim special ed students are often the targets of bullies. The thought of all the potential lawsuits is bloodcurdling!! Maybe the fiscal danger will serve to jump start a zero tolerance of bullying behaviors in public schools.
