Dear Cecelia,
Some lawmakers like to pretend that they’re “protecting women’s health” when they endorse laws curbing reproductive rights.
Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant is not one of them. Instead, his fervor for an “abortion free” state is clearly on the record.
Take Action: Tell Gov. Bryant that his politics threaten the health, safety, and rights of Mississippi women.
Last year, the Governor and his cronies passed a law requiring all doctors providing abortions to have “admitting privileges” to hospitals. This requirement is medically unjustified and really only has one goal: to shut down Jackson Women’s Health Organization—the last abortion clinic in the state.
This year, anti-choice legislators went for a more direct approach and introduced a “fetal heartbeat” bill. If passed, abortions would be outlawed as soon as a fetal heartbeat can be detected—which can occur as early as six weeks, before many women even know they’re pregnant.
The Center for Reproductive Rights is already in court representing Jackson Women’s Health Organization—but Gov. Bryant has made it abundantly clear that he would sign a “heartbeat” bill if it ever reaches his desk.
Tell Gov. Bryant that you stand with Mississippi women and will not let his crusade to cut off women’s access to abortion services go unchallenged.
Make no mistake about it: Governor Bryant poses a serious threat to the constitutionally protected rights of Mississippi women. He believes that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided and should be overruled. Working with a host of zealous and belligerent opponents of reproductive freedom in the legislature, that’s exactly what he’s trying to do.
The Center is committed to keeping the Jackson Women’s Health Organization open so they can continue to provide women with the high-quality reproductive health care they’ve offered for 17 years.
We will fight back because women have a fundamental right to make decisions about their health and future. Stand with us and make your voice heard.
Thanks, as always, for all you do, |
