Ban Fracking Now

If you are like me, you are deeply suspicious of industry that extracts fossil fuels, even “natural gas”.  The pressure from wealthy interests to get the ok to proceed with fracking projects in New York State is mounting on Governor Cuomo, especially for the jobs they supposedly would bring.  But when you see how other state’s environments have suffered after fracking, it is clear it would be a bad bargain for New York.  Last chance to express your position on the issue, folks.  Read on from Credo Action:

CREDO action
Governor Cuomo’s administration announced that the state’s health impact study will be completed “in the next few weeks,” paving the way for Governor Cuomo to make a decision on fracking in New York. That means now is a vitally important time to put pressure on the governor to ban fracking.

Dear Cecelia,

In February, we won a small victory in the fight to ban fracking in New York: Governor Cuomo’s administration announced that it would take more time to decide whether to open New York to fracking, saying it needed more time to study the health impacts of fracking.1

But, recently, Governor Cuomo’s administration announced that the state’s health impact study will be completed “in the next few weeks,” Continue reading

Hugo Chavez vs “The Network” By Greg Palast

You kids know I’m a sharing kind of gal.  But heck, I’ve been super busy these last few weeks, and so been remiss in posting this nugget from my inbox.  I have been a bad, bad, girl!

But no worries, I have posted the whole email in its entirety for you.  I really hope I run across Mr. Palast in the city one of these fine days.  Enjoy, and you can always sign up for your own alerts.

Hugo Chavez vs “The Network”
By Greg Palast for Vice Magazine
Thursday, March 14, 2013London, February 2002. A tiny, dark and intense woman waited at the end of a lecture until I was alone, brought her face strangely close to mine and whispered, “President Chavez needs you. Right now. To Caracas. Right now. You must come to see him.”

President Who? All I knew about this Hugo Chavez guy was that he was an Latin-American jefe, led a bungled coup and was filled with a lot of populist bullshit and a lot of oil. Continue reading

MOC Aerial Video of Arkansas Oil Spill

Did you know there was another oilspill, this time on the much lauded Canadian oil sands pipeline?  Kind of like the Keystone thingy the president is being pressured to fast track.  Yeah.  You heard maybe a mention yesterday.  And now, silence.  Well.

Judging by the lack of reporting in traditional media, you’d hardly know that this is happening in Arkansas:

Losing Our Civilization: A Rant

All great civilizations throughout known human history have had several things in common, which in my opinion, help make them great.  Fairer property, commerce and labor laws, better systems of governing and organization, public access to clean water, state supported schools and libraries, state built big engineering works like dams, parks and roads, and patronage of the arts and sciences are a few examples.

It feels like America is losing its grip on these attributes.  The highways and bridges that are the lifeblood of capitalism are crumbling.  Our underground systems that deliver water and power to our homes are ancient, primed for catastrophe.  Continue reading

Illegally Fired For Speaking Out

Cablevision/Optimum illegally fired La’kesia Johnson, a Cablevision technician, along with 22 others.

How do I know that?  Because she told me so.  I often share my better items I get in my inbox here, and this one deserves to be included:

Below is an email from La’kesia Johnson, a Cablevision technician who worked with the Communication Workers of America to create a petition on SignOn.org, the nonprofit site that allows anyone to start their own online petition. If you have concerns or feedback about this petition, click here.

Dear MoveOn member,

I got fired just for speaking my mind about my working conditions. That’s not just wrong, it’s illegal.

I’ve worked as a Cablevision/Optimum technician for more than 6 years. A year ago, my coworkers and I voted to form a union, so we could have a voice on the job. But a year has come and gone, and Cablevision/Optimum management hasn’t negotiated in good faith for a contract.  Continue reading

FCC Communications Commission, Please Get It Done!

Hmmm…Common sense dictates that more open competition is needed for better internet service and quality for Americans comparable to what Europeans already enjoy.  I signed the petition I received in my email from the intrepid folks at Daily Kos.  You might want to consider doing the same.

Cecelia, please join with Daily Kos and Free Press in urging the Federal Communications Commission to follow through on their proposal to make more high-quality wireless spectrum available for public use, which is a key first step on the path towards better and more public Wi-Fi. Click here to sign the petition—we’ll deliver the signatures through official FCC channels.

Business Interests Trumps Family At Thanksgiving

Ask the average person, they’d say family is more important than money.  But the retail businesses, like Target, Walmart, Best Buy and Macy’s behave to the contrary.  Each year over the past decade, Black Friday has crept closer to ruining the Thanksgiving holiday for many American families.  The seemingly bottomless thirst for post-holiday bargains has helped to perpetuate this.

Who cares about retail workers, some say. Get a real job, slacker.  Not everyone wants family time.  Walmart workers are trying to fight this, to the derision of conservative pundits.  They should just be happy to employed in this economy, claims the brainiac Andrea Tantaros, on Fox News.  Of course, she also thought it fun to mock the poor by joking about living on food stamps as a great way to diet. Vague Against the Machine

We are all excited for the second presidential debate and in the meantime, Jon Stewart explores the Romney Tax Plan, that mythical plan which will reduce the deficit, reduce taxes, and yet magically cost no one anything Continue reading
