Alternatives to Eating Pink Slime Ground Beef

Since no one running for political office this year is going to touch this issue of food safety and inaccurate labeling of meat with a ten foot pole, I will be the one to tell you:  You do not have to rely on the USDA to rubber stamp the safety of your food.  Those of us who relied on the USDA for consumer protection and accurate information, were shocked at the recent news stories regarding the widespread practice of adding pink slime, or lean finely textured beef, as a filler to ground beef in the meat industry.  With the chummy way USDA inspectors and high level officials behave with the very people they are supposed to keep a close eye on, one wonders what the next nasty discovery will be?  Continue reading

USDA approved Pink Slime in your burger

Yes, even before the story broke this week, I knew about the pink slime, heard about it the first time while screening ‘Food, Inc’, an Oscar nominated documentary that takes you to look inside America’s huge corporate food industry and its practices.  The pink slime phenomenon was addressed while the filmmakers toured an enormous meat packing plant, explaining how it is actually made from what’s left of a cow carcass after all the muscular cuts of meat have been removed (gristle and sinew), cooked and pulverized into slurry, then sprayed with ammonia to kill pathogens, so it is ‘safe’ for human consumption.  Continue reading
