Justice should not see stripes.

I know that I already posted a petition about the issue of rape in the military, and the poor way such cases are handled but…..this is only right, and sadly, still very necessary.

Below is an email from Trina McDonald, a U.S. Navy veteran and rape survivor. Trina started a petition on the MoveOn website, where anyone can start their own online petition.

Tell Congress: Protect Survivors of Military Sexual Assault.

Dear MoveOn member,

In 1989, I volunteered for the U.S. Navy. I was assigned a duty station in Adak, Alaska. I got there on Valentine’s Day, and within two months, I was raped for the first time.

The people involved in my rapes were military police personnel, security personnel, higher-ranking officers—the people that I would have gone to and reported. And so, I have never had the opportunity to actually report it to anyone. Continue reading

Petition: Justice for victims of sexual assault in the military

Its good to see more sense and sensitivity to whats right and decent coming out of Minnesota especially in regards to what is tantamount to an epidemic of rape in the Armed Forces.  If you have not heard or read about this problem in recent weeks then you have been living under a rock.  Here is a petition worthy or your attention, from the esteemed Senator Franken.

Al Franken - U.S. Senator, Minnesota

Dear Cecelia,

We might not like to think that our men and women in uniform are at risk of being sexually assaulted when they volunteer to serve our country — but the ugly truth is, it happens far too often.

This month, the Department of Defense estimated that more than 26,000 cases of sexual assault took place in the military in 2012.

It gets worse. The year before, only 10 percent of reported cases – only a fraction of the total – ever resulted in a trial where the victims could find justice. A stunning 62 percent of victims felt like they were retaliated against for coming forward. Continue reading

GOP Rape Advisory Chart

The hits in the War on Women just keep on coming, so much misinformation and flat out misogyny in the men who are vying to win office in our country right now!!  I’ve been seeing this chart all over the internet, and so thought I should share this email with you, kids, for educational purposes.  Enjoy!

Cecelia, Republicans have introduced so many new types of rape recently—legitimate rape, honest rape, emergency rape, forcible rape, gift-from-God rape—that it’s getting difficult to keep track of them all. Continue reading

Tell Rep. Akin: Resign over your shameful, ignorant, and dangerous rape comments.

Below is an email from Kat Barr of the organization UltraViolet. Kat created a petition on SignOn.org, the nonprofit site that allows anyone to start their own online petition.

Dear MoveOn Member,

Victims of “legitimate rape” can’t get pregnant because a woman’s body will shut down and prevent the pregnancy. Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) actually said that—in other words, he’s saying that if a woman does get pregnant, she must not have been raped. Even scarier? He’s running—and leading—in the race for Missouri’s senate seat. Continue reading

Todd Akin, Misinformed on Abortion

Missouri Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin (R) said: “From what I understand from doctors … if it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”   Proving he’s not that media savvy, sensitive, or even that bright, Todd Akin’s controversial comments about “legitimate rape,” have gotten him in hot water, with the GOP pulling his funding for a Senate race.   Good news for Missouri’s women!  I find, after reviewing his idiotic assertion on rape, I can’t express my rage without swearing!  I have posted a link instead to Malia Litman’s blog for her unique take on Monday’s comments.  “NO” Means “Yes” If You are Todd Akin « Malia Litman’s Blog.

Virginian women’s rights undermined, or, Virginia, on my mind (and in other places!)

Aside from a bill that defines personhood at conception and bans some methods of contraception(very close in tone to the recent bill passed by the Oklahoma Senate), the Virginia House of Delegates also passed a preliminary measure, sponsored by Republican Delegate Kathy J. Byron, requiring a woman to receive an ultrasound before having an abortion.  Continue reading

Oh, Oklahoma! Personhood Act bans abortion

Come November 2012, Oklahoman women can enjoy no reproductive rights at all in another mind boggling, insane attack from the religious right against women’s rights.  As well as the pronouncement that “Life begins at conception” SB 1433 takes away the rights of women over their own bodies, and confers rights of existing human beings to those who don’t exist yet.  Here are some highlights and the link to the brand new “Personhood Act”, SB 1433:  Continue reading

Faith Versus Women’s Health Needs

If you’ve been paying attention to the headlines lately, you may have heard the Catholic/Christian complaint that the Obama administration is violating their religious freedom by trying to reduce the American working woman’s cost for birth control medications by requiring health insurance companies to cover contraceptives. Continue reading
