Hugo Chavez vs “The Network” By Greg Palast

You kids know I’m a sharing kind of gal.  But heck, I’ve been super busy these last few weeks, and so been remiss in posting this nugget from my inbox.  I have been a bad, bad, girl!

But no worries, I have posted the whole email in its entirety for you.  I really hope I run across Mr. Palast in the city one of these fine days.  Enjoy, and you can always sign up for your own alerts.

Hugo Chavez vs “The Network”
By Greg Palast for Vice Magazine
Thursday, March 14, 2013London, February 2002. A tiny, dark and intense woman waited at the end of a lecture until I was alone, brought her face strangely close to mine and whispered, “President Chavez needs you. Right now. To Caracas. Right now. You must come to see him.”

President Who? All I knew about this Hugo Chavez guy was that he was an Latin-American jefe, led a bungled coup and was filled with a lot of populist bullshit and a lot of oil. Continue reading

WFP and Sick Days For NYers

It’s been along time since I enjoyed a job with benefits.  But luckily, I have been fortunate enough to be fairly healthy.  One day my luck will run out.  And I will go to work sick, as there is no other option.

Is there hope for us workaday wage slaves with no health insurance, or sick time?  According to this email, things are looking up!

Cecelia ,

Can you contribute $5 to help win the next big fight in New York City?

Getting sick should never mean getting fired. And because of you, at least in New York City, it will never mean that again.

This is huge. Because of your support, we’re on track to win paid sick days for a million working New Yorkers.[1]

This has been our top priority fight in New York City for three years, and it hasn’t been easy. Just a few months back, Continue reading

Illegally Fired For Speaking Out

Cablevision/Optimum illegally fired La’kesia Johnson, a Cablevision technician, along with 22 others.

How do I know that?  Because she told me so.  I often share my better items I get in my inbox here, and this one deserves to be included:

Below is an email from La’kesia Johnson, a Cablevision technician who worked with the Communication Workers of America to create a petition on SignOn.org, the nonprofit site that allows anyone to start their own online petition. If you have concerns or feedback about this petition, click here.

Dear MoveOn member,

I got fired just for speaking my mind about my working conditions. That’s not just wrong, it’s illegal.

I’ve worked as a Cablevision/Optimum technician for more than 6 years. A year ago, my coworkers and I voted to form a union, so we could have a voice on the job. But a year has come and gone, and Cablevision/Optimum management hasn’t negotiated in good faith for a contract.  Continue reading

Racial Inequality and The Adult Film Industry

Color me appalled, even our naughty movie industry is bigoted! Enjoy the article from Color Lines. Porn Stars of Color Face Racial Inequality and Wage Gap Too – COLORLINES.  You really do learn something new everyday!

I don’t know why the huge income disparity among the differing races in the field of Pornography surprised me so much, but it did. Continue reading

Speaker Quinn: Allow Vote on Paid Sick Days

As I have said before, I am one of the millions of Americans left with no choice but to work a low paying job, with zero benefits and no sick time, paid or otherwise.  I received a request to sign a petition to fight for paid sick days for workers in New York City, and guess what I did immediately?  Continue reading

Working Families Party

Working Families Party is a neat little Progressive page for those of us in New York, and other states, that think it really sucks that people work hard for forty hours a week, and yet have no health insurance, sick pay or vacation time.  Working families can’t afford their own lobbyists, so it is nice to something on the internet that represents them.  Continue reading

Still sick in the city

Women are all riled up(and rightly so!) about the religious right’s hijacking of the Susan G. Komen foundation.  I’d like to draw your attention to another  upsetting, everyday women’s health issue, just in the city where I live, where so much of the world’s money flows.  Fact is, there are an estimated 1.6 million working New Yorkers without a single paid sick day.  Let that shameful fact sink in.  Many workers work while sick for fear of losing their job, or just because they cannot function financially without that day’s pay.  Many women cannot leave their jobs to seek treatment from a doctor when sick, let alone for OB/GYN visits for cancer screenings, mammograms, or blood-work.  That is, if they are fortunate enough to even have health insurance that allows access to these lifesaving preventative procedures!  Continue reading
